I will always remember our tutor in engineering, John Hasker who graduated in 1960 and who worked in the city at John Dohrmann and Partners, a firm of consulting engineers.

John tutored us in the evenings in a small room on the ground floor in the ways of engineering and hopefully some of it stuck to us. To me as a young undergraduate he was a breath of fresh air, always ready for a joke and always interested in what we were doing. He was forever training at athletics, but I did not realise how good he was at it (he was a state and national level sportsman who competed at the Empire Games). John has had a very distinguished career in engineering, management, was CEO of several companies and with many board appointments over many years.

John Woodside, John Hasker, Robert Milne and former Master of Ormond Rufus Black.

Just as a small piece of history, after graduating I returned from Ormond to tutor with John who was director of engineering in the College. After he retired I took over John’s job as tutor, so we both have a long association with Ormond College and teaching young engineers.

There is now a scholarship in John’s honour to provide financial assistance to aspiring engineers to call Ormond home. The scholarship is funded by Robert Milne and other engineers tutored by John.
